The Down Valley Divas were set up in 2004, mostly thanks to the efforts of Lara Large, who was looking to play hockey at a more competitive level. Lara recruited women from all over the Vail Valley, some former WARP members along with some newly indoctrinated players from the Mountain Women’s Hockey League (MWHL). The Eagle Ice rink was chosen as the Diva’s new home.

Divas Debut in Craig After their first season the Divas managed to procure second place at the end of season tournament in the Women’s Association of Colorado Hockey (WACH) league. This has proved to be their best result so far, though not for long!
The Divas (Mountain B2 Division) are one of three competitive women’s teams that hail from the Vail Valley. The other two are the Twin Peaks (Mountain B2 Division) and the Vail Breakaways (A Division), both of which are based out of Dobson Ice Arena in Vail.

Dave and Paul in Craig Starting off under the guidance of Paul Redmond and Lance Carlson, along with help from Dave Waluk and Rob Fawcett, the Divas started to make inroads into the world of competitive hockey. Paul the head coach for two years may well be remembered most for his slightly quirky emails to the team. For example:

"Relax and have fun. We are all better skaters, shooters, passers and most important I am much better looking then their coach."
Paul continues to coach the Shooters in the MWHL league.

Following Paul’s footsteps, Aaron Beckman took over the helm of the Down Valley Divas and has constantly strived to promote a fast paced game from the team. Aaron likes to end the practice with the teams’ favorite drill – “crushers”. Last year Tim Dundon also stepped on board to help out the team. Tim brought a competitive edge and a wealth of experience with him.

This year (2008) we have had the good fortune to welcome both Kraig Labbe and Dan Woods on board as our new coaches. Both are eager to teach us some new skills and play making strategies. They will be working together to make us into a force to be reckoned with.

Over the past few years the Divas have stepped up the pace to become a more competitive team. Following a lot of discussion, the team now requires a high level of commitment from all players. The level of play in the WACH league has grown tremendously (thanks in part to the huge growth in popularity of women’s hockey) and the Divas are constantly striving to improve their game.

If you are interested in skating with us or simply coming to watch one of our games we always welcome new faces. We are eager to promote women’s ice hockey in Colorado. We also welcome teams that would like to come and scrimmage us while they enjoy the perks of the Vail Valley (world class skiing, mountain biking, river sports etc). Please feel free to drop us an email or call us anytime. Remember it's never too late to start playing ice hockey!
