Eagle Divas take second in Mountain Division

By Daily Staff Report,
Hockey teams from around the mountains descended upon Eagle last weekend for the Women's Association of Colorado Hockey Mountain Division tournament.

The teams attending this season finale tournament were the Down Valley Divas of Eagle, the Vail Twin Peaks, the Aspen Mother Puckers 2, the Steamboat Edge, the Steamboat Storm, the Craig Puck Ewes, and the Glenwood Springs Ice Queens.

Round robin pool play was held on Friday night and Saturday, with playoff games on Sunday. In these early games, goals for the Vail Valley teams, Twin Peaks and Down Valley Divas were scored by Courtney Holm, Kimmy Peterson, and Molly Love of the Peaks, and Lara Large, Terry Stimac, Deb Jordan, Mella Wheatley, Jen Waluk, and Dana Beliunas of the Divas.

The Ice Queens, Twin Peaks and Storm came into the tournament as the top seeds and all were in position to play in the championship game by Sunday morning. After coming off an upset by rival Steamboat team, the Edge, the Storm were again upset by the Down Valley Divas by a score of 2-1 to eliminate the Storm's championship hopes. Both Divas goals were scored by Terry Stimac. Diane Anderson of the Storm scored on Divas goalie Joetta Stocks in the third period. Stocks had 20 saves in the game.

In the second game for championship position, the Glenwood Ice Queens went up against the Vail Twin Peaks in a thrilling overtime contest. Courtney Holm of the Twin Peaks scored early in the first period, quickly followed by an Ice Queens goal. The game remained tied until 1:10 into overtime, when Erin Ray of the Ice Queens scored to give Glenwood the win, setting up the championship game against the Divas.

In the battle for third place, the Storm defeated the Twin Peaks by a score of 3-0 with goals by Susie Leeson, Deb Rose, and Diane Letson. Twin Peaks goalie Willow Murphy saved 26 shots in the effort.

Ice Queens forward Erin Ray dominated the championship game against the Down Valley Divas, scoring all three goals in the game, the last of which was against an empty net as Divas coach Paul Redmond tried to generate some last minute offense by pulling goalie Joetta Stocks. Despite Stocks' 27 saves, the Divas were defeated 3-0. The win for the Ice Queens capped off an 8-1-3 season and an undefeated run in the tournament.
